Why do so many banks claim to be the “FIRST” ?

First National Bank
1st State Bank
1st Federal
FIrst State Teachers Credit Union

It is obvious they aren’t the first, so why do they all claim to be the first? What is so good about adding “First” to their name, should’t they just try to be origional?

Probably because it just sounds better. At one time, I’m sure it meant they were the first, but eventually no one could claim they were the first, but the name stuck.

I think something that is even more confusing is Fifth-Third Bank. Not only is it fifth, it is also third. Now that’s a mystery.
