Is there a way to have one of the credit bureaus to notify you whenever a new account is open for free?

Bill asked:

I know you can pay for a service in which you can check your credit report daily and have them notify you about new credit lines. Is there a way to have them notify you when a new credit line is opened for free?

Sorry, none of the credit reporting agencies will do this for free. If you want instant notification about new accounts being opened or something fishy is going on with some of your accounts, you have to pay a fee for the service. It may also come with insurance protection in case you are victim of identity theft.

You can write a letter and flag your account and ask that any new lines of credit first call you at your home phone prior to opening any new account. That is a free service and it prevents some thief from stealing your identity and going to Circuit City and buying $3,000 worth of electronics with an “instant credit” account. When you flag yourself this way each new creditor will have to call you first and make sure it is you that applied for the credit.
