Is Credit Suisse in England the same as the one in London?
imhappy asked:
In more detail…
A friend of mines father has just come into quite a bit of money and dangerously wants to put it into an offshore account to avoid tax even though its illegal. He chose Credit Suisse in Switzerland. When I asked him how he was going to deposit money into his account when he lives in England, he stated that he’d put it into the Credit Suisse branch in London. This doesn’t make sense to me, because if he’s trying to avoid tax, surely putting it into the branch in the UK would mean that he’d have to pay tax. This confuses me and I’m not sure he fully understands. Can anyone help our debate as I’m almost certain that it isn’t possible. Thanks in advance.

You are right. Choosing a foreign bank in the UK is of no help at all. Interest on money which is anywhere in the UK is subject to UK tax. So is interest on money anywhere else, which HMRC are adept at finding out about. He is more likely to end up (along with another 80,000 people who don’t know what’s about to hit them) with heavy fines or a prison sentence by trying to avoid tax on interest – unless he avoids putting it anywhere in the European Economic Area, or in any counry with which the UK has a tax treaty. That leaves him with very little choice beyond a handful of countries that nobody in their right minds would deposit so much as a used handkerchief in.
