Steve Says:

there are only 3 credit scoring agencies in uk, and only 1 is free for 30 days :

The best thing to do is have a credit card, buy petrol or something on it, then pay it off in full every month, that acts as not a payment but a full balance payment which is better on your score.

Pay what you owe! Other than that declare insolvency and you will get a clear record after, I think it’s 2 years now? It used to be 5 years. Sorry to sound like someones mum, but try not to get into debt, ‘eh? :) (I know easier said than done in this day and age)!

Experian is free for 30 days, but make sure you cancel it after that otherwise you will get billed.

Get your self a vanquis visa card. (I have terrible credit and they gave me one)
Purchase something for about £20 and pay off the minimum each month. This will build up your rating. Paying it off in one go will not improve your rating as mad as that sounds! The APR on this card is SHOCKING. About 49%. But these are the lengths if you wish to improve your score! I had this card for 3 months and I had 2 more offers of credit cards after that. I dont reccomend you take out more than one though. And for the love of god – Make the payments!!!!

Best of luck

I am British, I dont think we have a credit history that you can check on as such (unless its changed in the last 8yrs that I’ve been living overseas!).

You can get a free credit report from Equifax, but you have to remember to cancel your direct debit after the first month (this sounds like too much hassle to me).

There is a better way to do it (in my opinion) …. There are 3 companies that hold information on you:

Equifax
Experian
Callcredit

The law states that if you write to them along with a cheque for £2, they MUST provide all the information they have on you.

Take a look at the following website, it tells you all about it – and provides FREE letter templates – so all you have to do is fill in your personal details ……

Hope this helps!
