If you are a teacher in a low-income school district, your student loans may be forgiven….

If you received a Stafford Loan on or after October 1, 1998, and you teach full time for five consecutive years in a designated low-income school. (This applies to FFEL Stafford Loans, Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, and in some cases, Consolidation Loans.)

If you have a loan from the Federal Perkins Loan Program, you might be eligible for loan cancellation for full-time teaching at a designated low-income school or teaching in certain subject areas. You can view the list of teacher shortage areas here:

As far as which schools qualify, well, there are too many schools to list here. To search the database of schools that qualify for the forgiveness, try this site:

Once you know that you meet the criteria, you can complete a Stafford
or Direct loan cancellation form here:

If you meet the criteria for Perkins cancellation, you will need to speak to the school(s) from which you received the loan(s).
