How much trouble can someone get in for stealing my credit card?

Credit Trouble
Fargi asked:

My sister’s boyfriend stole my credit card and charged $800 worth of stuff. I reported it stolen before I knew it was him. If they discover it was him, how much trouble can he get in? We live in Ontario, Canada. I don’t care if he gets caught, I am just concerned about my sister as she does still love him for some reason.

Citicop Says:

In the States, it would be a felony for stealing it, and a separate felony for every different time he used it.

It’s a really big deal.

he can go to jail

Tdot Says:

He could be charged under s342 of the Criminal Code, which deals with credit card theft. This is a Hybrid offence, and would likely be dealt with as a summary conviction.

You should be prudent and sort this out with the credit card company one way or another. If for example they reimburse you some of the $800 while you know who used the card, you could also be facing criminal code charges.

what he charged? who cares what your sister thinks. you need to tell the police you know who did it and have him arrested and you need to file charges against him.
