Defaulted on previous Canadian student loan. Is there any way to get another one now?

canadian student loan
honeyrlr asked:

About 12 years ago, I finished a course and had Alberta and Canada student loans. Shortly after, I moved in with my (soon to be) husband. We started a family, and such. He refused to pay my debts, but also would not let me work. Everytime I brought up my student loan, he would brush it off. That was a long time ago.

Two years ago, the kids and I left him. In the meantime I have gone back to school to do upgrading, and I have been accepted to pre-med at a local college. I have been paying regularily on one of my loans, but unable to make payments on the other. Now, I have student loan forms sitting in front of me and I just have an awful feeling that I won’t qualify.

Is there anything that I can do? I’d be sick if I was unable to continue on with my education now. Any help at all would be very much appreciated.
Please, no more responses from loan solicitors. I’m not interested.

You might append a letter to the form, explaining just what you have told us, and giving as a reference the student loan you have been working on paying off.
Good luck with it — meanwhile, apply for as many scholarships as you can find. There may be extra help available for single moms (esp. with children) so talk to the counsellor at the college and ask for information on any loans for which you may be eligible.
Good luck!
