Can there be student loan forgiveness for moms who decide to stay home to raise their children?

student loan forgiveness
Rachael asked:

There is student loan forgiveness for people who do volunteer work or for teachers who teach low-income children, so why not for moms who have no income of their own, and choose the non-paying job of raising children?

Gefilte Girl Says:

Wait, so you’re suggesting that women go to college, then turn around and not use it? I’m not saying it’s ridiculous, but on paper it sure sounds like it.

Sicilia has lost it Says:

no, you cannot do that.

its very tough to get a forgiveness loan. i have heard of stories where the person was totally disabled and dependant on low disability checks/month. they still had a tough time with forgiveness.

gregerous Says:

noone forced moms to get pregnant. people who go out of their way to help people who’s ill situations they didn’t create—deserve help.

honesty&wisdom Says:

If you’re going to stay home and raise children, why bother to get the degree? There are many people that have degrees that don’t use them and they have to pay them off anyway. I’m considering going back to school once i finish my degree, and the government doesn’t give a rat’s rump, they’ll still want their loot back.

*edit* well royal, given the number of thumbs down that you received, i’m not the only one that disagrees with you.

? Says:

I wish. But I used my degree before become a mother since I waited about 4 years after graduating to have children and I work from home using the knowledge I obtained from college so I’m getting my money’s worth. It’s kind of like buying a car and never driving it. It’s not Toyota’s fault that you don’t drive. However, I still wish my loan was paid off. Only 3 more years to go.

Tracy M Says:

You are still obligated to pay off that loan. It is your choice to stay home and not have an income however that loan is still something you are responsible for paying off.

TreeAlbero Says:

You can defer your loans if you’re not earning money.

I am all for staying home with your kids (college graduates included). However, you have a moral and legal obligation to repay the money you borrowed. If you don’t, a younger person won’t have the opportunity to make choices given to you.

MEGAMI Says:

It would be great but nah I don’t quite see that one happening anytime soon if ever. Not with this economy.

royalbird Says:

Unfortunately, probably not. Our society give little value to mothers who stay home to raise their children, not realizing that mothers who stay home contribute great value to society by giving society more competent children who grow into adulthood with a strong sense of their mothers’ love for them, which enables them to be more productive, happier people.

As for the people who’ve said that getting a degree just stay home is useless (Honesty&Wisdom), how wrong you are. Given the choice between educating one man or one woman, I would educate one woman, because when you educate a woman, especially one who stays home to teach her own children from birth, you educate generations. That woman will take what she learned and apply it to her home life and teach her children using that knowledge that she gained from a degree.

Also, there are degrees in fields that can be quite useful to stay-at-home moms, fields such as family and social sciences, education, even nursing. All of these fields can greatly benefit the stay-at-home mom who uses them in daily life. And what about the day that her husband gets killed in a car accident or decides to leave her for another woman? She will be better equipped to support her own family if she has a degree.

Erica C Says:

uhh no. no one made you get pregnant.

Lucy Says:

No.
A debt is a debt.
Make payment arrangements, in many cases u can pay as little as 50 bucks a month.

R Says:

While we are at why not Social workers (which i am) doctors who go into family practice because it is low paying and not many are going into anymore. They just keep trying to forgive everyones loans soon no one will pay back anything.
You can deffer government loans if you don’t have income but not private. So that is like a forgiveness. Well not really you just delay the payments.

kny390 Says:

This is a choice that you make to stay home. Pay your bills so someone else can go.

kitkat Says:

Would this apply to all stay at home moms? Im a stay at home mom with no income of my own. Would i qualify? Now my husband has an income. He makes just over $112k a year from a trust fund. He owns 4 income properties. He recieves another $75k from disability insurance (private insurance NOT SSI) at the moment. Would i still qualify? Im still a stay at home mom with no income of my own. This is one major problem with the idea of loan forgiveness for stay at home moms. It would be ridiculous to allow someone with my household income to not pay a loan. And this isnt even touching the fact that all of us have the option of working or staying home. For those of us who choose to stay home we still have to be responsible to our debts. If we give special treatment based on being a stay at home mom we do a HUGE disservice to the working moms who struggle with bills. If anyone should be given debt forgiveness it should be people like Johnny’s Mommy who work damn hard outside the home and struggle with bills because of a father who doesn’t pay regular support or not enough, plus raise a good child after work. Those of us blessed enough to be able to stay home don’t deserve more breaks in life while good people like that struggle.
